Finding Hope Through Poetry: How Words Can Help You Through Hard Times
There is a reason people reach for poems when things get hard.
Sometimes it’s a conversation with a friend. Sometimes it’s a favorite book. And sometimes, it’s a poem.

Something about the rhythm of a few lines, the honesty of a simple image, the feeling of someone else having already been where you are – it does something that paragraphs of advice cannot do. It makes you feel less alone in a very specific, quiet way.
If you have been going through a difficult season – grief, loss, loneliness, the low hum of a world that feels like too much – poetry might not fix anything. But it might help you carry it a little more easily.
Why We Turn to Poetry in Hard Times
Many therapists, educators, and readers have long turned to poetry to help process emotions and feel less alone. Not because poems are magic – but because language, when it is precise, honest, and human, helps us make sense of what we are feeling.
When you read a poem that captures exactly what you have been struggling to articulate, something in you releases a little. The burden of carrying an unnamed feeling gets lighter because now it has a name. Someone else felt this. Someone else found the words.
What Heartfelt Poetry Offers
Not all poetry is comforting, of course. Some is challenging or provocative by design.
But heartfelt poetry – the kind written with genuine warmth and an honest desire to connect – offers something different. It offers company. It reminds you that love is real, that friendship matters, that this life is still full of beauty even when it does not feel that way.
That is what I set out to write in all three of my collections. Not poetry that makes you work for the meaning – but poetry that meets you where you are and offers something warm.
A poem like “My Light, My Sunshine” from Heart & Soul. This poem is a tribute to people who find solace through affection and desire in their daily journeys. Or “A Peaceful Place” from Warmth, Care, & Feelings. This poem reflects on finding moments of calm and hope in a busy world. They are not complicated. They are simply honest. And sometimes honest is exactly what you need.
A Few Ways to Use Poetry When You Are Hurting
If you are going through something difficult right now, here are a few ways poetry can be a quiet companion:
- Read one poem in the morning before the day starts. Just one. Let it sit with you.
- Keep a book on the nightstand for the nights when you cannot sleep and need something gentle to hold onto.
- Share a poem with someone you love who is also struggling. Sometimes a poem says what you wish you could.
- Read a poem out loud. There is something about hearing the words that lands differently than reading them silently.
You do not have to be going through something terrible to benefit from poetry. But if you are – know that people have been writing through exactly what you are feeling for as long as there have been people. You are not alone in it.
